Our History

Holy Spirit School opened its doors on September 15, 1965, under the auspices of the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell. The building was erected on the 7.5 acre complex and consisted of eight classrooms, a Library and Music room. Two single family homes were joined to serve as Holy Spirit's convent and housed the four nuns assigned to the school. Three nuns and five lay people, the first faculty, educated 359 students.

In 1975 the two remaining nuns of the original four moved to St. Michael's convent in Union, and the convent was transformed to house the first half-day kindergarten class and CCD offices. In 1984, Pre-K three and four-year-old half-day afternoon programs were added to accommodate the demands of the community. In 1987, the Pre-K three-year-old program was dropped and the four-year-old program was expanded to five afternoons per week and the kindergarten class was expanded to full days. The Pre-K program began full day sessions in 2008.

Holy Spirit School draws from the Union residents and all the surrounding towns. Throughout the years, students have come to us from any outlying towns to accommodate parents who worked in nearby areas who seek a Christ-centered/faith-based education for their children.

Throughout the years, Holy Spirit has worked hard to keep up with the ever increasing technology of the times. The school has 24 computers in the 6, 7, 8 grade classrooms. There are three computers in each of the remaining grades. The Computer Lab has fourteen computers and a SmartBoard.

Grades Pre-K through 8 have SmartBoards and these are used to enhance delivery of curriculum and instruction within the daily curriculum in each grade. During the 2016-17 school year, Holy Spirit School will undergo an aggressive technology/phone systems upgrade and a new/robust and informative website will be made public. Google Classroom is also in the works to be implemented in the near future.

Holy Spirit School is a very special place "Where all God's children come together."
